The ever-increasing number of vehicles on the road impacts our environment severely.
To reduce pollution, car manufacturers must comply to stringent emissions standards, especially as regards:
- Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions - responsible for increasing the Greenhouse effect, particulate matters (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx*)
- causing health problems.
These emissions differ according to the engines: diesel or gasoline.

Diesel engines reduce fuel consumption, therefore CO2 emissions. Thanks to the major progress in diesel technology over the past years, diesel fuel is becoming more environmental friendly than gasoline.
The particulate filter is a reliable and efficient technology, already standard in over 3 million diesel vehicles in Europe, eliminating particulates. To become the cleanest vehicles, diesel engines now need to meet the challenge of reducing NOx.
Since 2005, the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology on heavy duty vehicles in Europe, ensure an efficient NOx after-treatment to meet Euro 4 emissions regulation. Acqueous solution of urea, such as AdBlue® is injected into the exhaust gas, drastically reducing NOx emissions. SCR technology should be implemented for light vehicles in 2008 and generalized in 2010/2012, to meet more stringent future european and US norms.
To meet these challenges, the combination of a Particulate Filter and SCR allows diesel to become one of the cleanest engine technology
of the world.
