Plastic fuel systems, a good option for vehicle mass saving

Blow molded based Plastic Fuel System technology offers the perfect balance between safety, weight and cost for automotive Fuel Systems. There are many advantages of using plastic materials for Fuel Systems Manufacturing, such as:

  • Lighter weight, allowing better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions: plastic fuel systems help to decrease the vehicle’s overall weight, as an average plastic tank weighs one-third less than an average steel tank. This results in potential significant savings in fuel consumption and related CO2 emissions.
  • Durability of the tank and biofuels compatibility: plastic fuel tanks are corrosion-resistant without any need of special coatings. The material used for Fuel Systems manufacturing, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), is highly resistant to corrosion coming from fuel but also from the corrosive environments outside the tank such as road chemicals, salt, mud, gravels. In addition, HDPE can help dissipate electrostatic charge and prevent igniting fuel. Thanks to this material resistance, plastic fuel systems are fully compatible with all kinds of bio-fuel (ethanol, bio diesels) and only a few minor adjustments on fuel system components themselves are required. Also, several studies demonstrated the superiority of plastics in termes of Life Cycle Assessment.
  • Design freedom allowing space economy: plastic is a material of choice to optimize space as there are virtually no limits to the shapes it can take. Plastic tanks can be designed to occupy all the space available around them, hence increasing the fuel storage capacity of the car and allowing more space for the passenger compartment.
  • Noise attenuation: thanks to insulating properties of plastics, Plastic Fuel Systems increase passenger's comfort by offering innovative and efficient solutions to control the fuel behavior and soften the slosh impact, thus reducing the Fuel System related noises that could be heard in the passenger compartment.
  • Low permeability: evaporative emission reductions can be achieved thanks to advanced composite structures and functional component integration allowed by plastics, combined with efficient process innovations.
  • Crash worthiness: achieved through the high impact performance of plastics fuel tanks, which can bend and flatten rather than tear, rupture and spill.
Fire resistance: due to good heat insulation of plastics.
  • Suitability for hybrid power trains: plastic fuel systems are fully compatible with hybrid power trains and only a few minor adjustments on fuel system components are required. Plastic fuel systems also offer their benefits for hybrid vehicles by enabling high design freedom and integration feasibility.
  • Cost effectiveness: added value is created by leveraging superior plastic material capability and manufacturing flexibility. Using plastics to produce fuel tanks is more cost-effective considering the complexity of its shape, its functional requirements (e.g. mechanical and chemical resistance) and the quantity of material to be used. Plastics offer in one single material a combination of great design flexibility, impact and corrosion resistance and low production costs (plastics can be processed at temperatures lower than steel or glass).

Since their introduction for Fuel Systems manufacturing application, Plastics have widely demonstrated superior performances over other competing technologies.

Member of PlasFuelSys
As a global player in producing plastic parts for the automotive industry, INERGY is a member of Plasfuelsys, an European association of plastic fuel tanks producers. Developers and producers  with about 40 plants in Europe and more than 10 000 employees are organized here. Plasfuelsys is a panel for professionals from all participating fields of knowledge, but this association also informs government and citizens about the benefits of modern plastic fuel tank systems. Plasfuelsys is part of the EUPC (European Plastics Converters) based in Brussels, Belgium.
